Drukgyel Dzong

4.7/5

The Dzong of Victorious Drukpas, built in the 1649s, stands as a commemoration of the triumphant moment when the Bhutanese forces secured victory over Tibetan armies. Positioned 6 km from Satsam Chorten, this architectural testament was strategically constructed to safeguard the Paro Valley against potential future threats. The dzong is a poignant reminder of historical events that shaped the region.

Unfortunately, the Dzong of Victorious Drukpas faced adversity in 1951 when it succumbed to fire. Since then, the structure has remained in a state of poignant abandonment, with minimal restoration efforts—limited to the installation of a shingled roof in 1985 to prevent further deterioration. Today, dzong is completed its reconstruction.

Situated at the end of the blacktop road, the site serves as a transition point where the well-trodden path gives way to the northern border area of Lingshi. This area is inhabited by yak herders, providing a glimpse into the traditional and pastoral way of life. The path onwards leads to the picturesque northern border region and, on clear days, unveils the majestic Mt. Jomolhari (7,314 m) in the backdrop, a towering presence accentuating the serene beauty of the landscape.

The Dzong of Victorious Drukpas not only marks a historical triumph but also invites reflection and meditation, offering visitors a tranquil space to connect with the past and appreciate the resilience embedded in the architectural remnants of Bhutan’s storied history.
