Bhutan Bird Watching Tour

(4.7)
4.7/5

Bhutan is considered as a bird-watchers’ paradise because of the great number and diversity of widespread species and has been designated as one of the world’s top 10 biodiversity “hotspots”. So far Bhutan has recorded 770 species of birds and the kingdom is recognized as 221 global widespread birds’ areas. This indicated that Bhutan have the place to offer to the bird watcher.

The diversity of bird life of Bhutan is accentuated by the migrations of hundreds of species between breeding grounds across a vast expanse of Asia to the north of Bhutan and wintering grounds of the subcontinent of India. The best known of these migrants is the black-necked cranes that breed in Tibet and then migrate over the Himalayas to spend the winter in several isolated valleys of Bhutan. In Bhutan they are spotted in the places like Phobjikha in western region, Bumthang in central region and Bomdeling in eastern Bhutan. They usually flock in large number in the month of October and fly back to Tibet between February and March.

The greatest diversity of Himalayan bird species is to be found in the Eastern Himalayas and a journey through Bhutan provides the opportunity to see such delights as White-bellied Heron, Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal, Blood Pheasant, Dark-rumped Swift, Ward’s Trogon, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, Coral-billed and Slender-billed Scimitar- Babblers, Long-billed, Rufousthroated, Bar-winged and Spotted Wren-Babblers, the strange Sikkim Wedge-billed Babbler, the near-endemic Bhutan Laughingthrush, Yellow-throated Fulvetta, White-naped Yuhina, Fulvous, Great, Brown and Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbills, Blue-fronted Robin, Broadbilled Warbler, Beautiful Nuthatch and a cacophony of Aughingthrushes, just to mention some of the endless highlights this fantastic journey has to offer.

The entire country is bisected by well-maintained paved road and the best season for birding is in spring (mid-March to late May). Hotel accommodation ranges from good to reasonable and roads are fairly good. All in all, Bhutan offers the discerning birder a truly unforgettable adventure.
